Fun for the arts & crafts kid, November 19, 2009

My daughter is always making things... potions, concoctions, art, you name it. This was by far her favorite birthday gift and has been using it nonstop since. I don't mind letting her break crayons to use this thing, crayons are cheap. I think the most important thing is to get all the wax out of the metal tray before it cools otherwise it's a pain. I haven't had any problems with the functionality.

Fun but need patience and adult supervision, November 23, 2009

Great educational toy to explain the melting point of solids and how certain products like crayons are made. Good use for your broken crayon pieces. But it takes a lot of adult assistance and patience to make useable crayons. You have to put in the exact amount of crayon - too little and it crumbles, too much and it spills into the other molds and messes up the colors. The molds have to be perfectly pushed shut or it will leak out. The melted wax has to be pored slowly or air bubbles will form in the crayons. You and your child have to wait for the light bulb to melt the wax before you can pore it in the molds. You have to wait for the unit to cool down before the cover will unlock (built in safety "feature" to prevent burning). After the cover will finally lift you can remove the molds, but you have to wait for them to completely cool or the crayons will not retain their shape (putting them in the freezer helps). By the time the cover lifts the remaining wax in the metal trays (of which there is a lot because not all of it will pore out) will be solid and you cannot easily wipe it out - it must be scraped out or it will taint the color of your next creation. All this said, my 6 year old loved it and would play with something else during the waiting times. We have made dozens of new crayons.
